Confirmation Sunday
June 1, 2008

Welcome! We thank God for bringing you here this morning
We pray that you hear the good news that through Jesus Christ
you have been reconciled to God!

Invocation

Confession and Absolution

P:   If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.

C: But if we confess our sins, God who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us         from all unrighteousness.

Silence for reflection and for self-examination.

P:   Let us confess our sins to God our Father.

C: Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We justly deserve Your present and eternal punishment. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name. Amen.

P:   Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore declare to you the forgiveness of all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. You are forgiven!

C: Amen.

P:   Beloved in the Lord, our Lord Jesus Christ said to His apostles: “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” You have been baptized and catechized in the Christian faith according to our Lord’s bidding. I ask you to profess your faith in Jesus Christ, reject sin, and confess the faith of the Church. Do you renounce the devil and all his empty promises?
R:   Yes, I do.

P:   Do you believe in God, the Father Almighty?
R:    I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

P:   Do you believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord?
R:   I believe in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father.   He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

P:   Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit?
R:   I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen

P:   We rejoice with thankful hearts that you have been baptized and have received the teaching of the Lord. You have confessed the faith and been absolved of your sins. As you continue to hear the Lord’s Word and receive His Sacrament, He who has begun a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.
C:   Amen.
